The liver is the organ that filters, processes, and breaks down what passes through your body. It’s responsible for filtering your blood and helping it to clot, breaking down any chemicals, alcohol, and drugs you take in while producing glucose and bile, two important substances you need to stay healthy. ~fishertitus.org

Liver health is vital for various issues and reasons in your life. When the liver becomes overwhelmed with toxins and pollutants, its natural working cycle slows down.  Alcohol, drugs and other taxing chemicals can overload it and can also get saturated with processed and fried foods, especially when consumed in large quantities.

If you are concerned about your fertility, for example, you will want your liver in excellent health to help produce the hormones needed for pregnancy. You may be concerned about your liver health if you are a recovering addict as well. Regardless of the reasons you choose to focus on your liver health, there are some super foods that can help.

Phytonutrient Plants

Phytonutrients are something that may seem new to you. If you aren’t sure what it is, keep this in mind. Phytonutrients refer to most leafy greens and green edible plants. These foods include cruciferous vegetables and leafy greens such as broccoli and kale which boost the number of glucosinolates in the body, a compound that can aid the enzyme production in the liver. Also, spinach, turnip greens, collard greens, beet greens, and other related hearty greens are all phytonutrient. These help to protect your liver while also helping to cleanse it during detox or during food changes.  By adding these types of plants to your lifestyle and diet, you can help flush the liver safely.

Garlic

Garlic is a cleansing spice that has medicinal properties. It also happens to be a superfood. This superfood is naturally full of compounds that can help break down toxins and remove them from your system without doing heavy damage to your organs like an over the counter chemical liver cleanse may do. It also helps when you are coming off an addiction, such as alcohol, that could have already caused some damage. Garlic contains selenium, a mineral that helps to detoxify the liver.

Walnuts

Walnuts are high in the amino acid arginine and assist the liver in detoxifying ammonia. They’re high in glutathione and omega-3 fatty acids, which all provide support to natural liver cleansing.

Turmeric

You may experience inflammation when you are cleansing your liver or trying to get it healthier for various aspects of your lifestyle. Turmeric can help with that. You can either take the powder mixed with warm soy or nut-based milk in a drink known as golden tea. If that is too bitter for you, you can try to take the powder in a capsule form. I love this Organic Turmeric Supplement by OmniBiotics. I add it int my homemade Mac and  Cheese which also gives it a nice yellow color that Little Guy wants in a Mac & Cheese! Any of these ways will deliver the anti-inflammatory superfood and help to calm down the area during the cleansing period. It also assists the liver in detoxing metals, while boosting bile production.

Milk Thistle

Milk thistle is a superfood that is generally found in capsule form and sold at most health food stores. It is used to not only treat liver issues but to also help repair liver damage. This is an ideal superfood supplement to take as needed, even on a daily basis, for liver health. This is the Organic Milk Thistle Supplement I take.

Green Tea

If you’re thirsty from all the liver-benefiting foods, try some green tea. This beverage contains catechins, plant-based antioxidants known to improve its function. Be careful to stick to green tea and not green tea extract, which can potentially negatively impact liver health. I love green tea and especially this Numi Organic Green Tea that comes in Non-GMO biodegradable tea bags!

These superfoods are fairly easy to find and easy to use. They can be found at most stores and some can be grown in the home as well. You can add these foods to your daily routine and even mix some in smoothies are juices that can help flush the liver and keep it healthy. You can improve your overall digestive health by staying on top of your diet.

Be Well,
